In autumn, the mountains of western North Carolina are a dramatic display of fiery sugar maples, buttery poplars and crimson oaks. Enjoy the cool crisp air of fall and view dramatic scenery from one of our Open Air Cars or ride comfortably in our First Class Club Cars.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is conveniently located just three hours from Atlanta, two hours from Knoxville or Gatlinburg, one hour from Asheville and right in the middle of some of the best rafting and outdoor adventure in the country. The south side of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just a short scenic drive from the railroad and the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harrah's Casino are located just 15 minutes away.

The Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad delivered thousands of mountaineers from the wilderness of their land locked hills in 1891. By the turn of the 20th Century railroads were booming in western North Carolina operating as many as four trains a day from Asheville to Murphy. The Murphy Branch is a story of challenge and obstacles and lost lives during the construction and is best told by experiencing first hand. There is nothing more nostalgic or moving than the sound of a train whistle as it echoes through the mountains. We are proud to provide visitors with an opportunity to experience this spirit of mountain railroading firsthand.
